This small songbird came into our lives during the 17th century. Spanish sailors brought them to the rest of Europe. These birds are named after the Canary Islands. They were used in coal mining to warn the workers when there were toxic gases in the mine. When the canary died it was time to leave.

Canaries can have many colors, most popular colors are yellow, orange, brown, black, white and red. Wild canaries are usually yellow-green with brown markings. They are social birds who live in groups, but defend a small territory as a couple. They mainly live on seeds from weeds, grass and figs, but they also like plants and small insects. ^[1]
